Deepak L BhatBeverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) (July 24, 2018) - Asher Kimchi, M.D., Founder and Chairman of the International Academy of Cardiology, today announced that Deepak L. Bhatt MD, MPH, Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Heart & Vascular Center and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA, will deliver the Twelfth H.J.C. Swan Memorial Lecture at the Opening Ceremony of the International Academy of Cardiology, Annual Scientific Sessions 2018, 23rd World Congress on Heart Disease, that will be held in Boston, MA, USA, from Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29, 2018.

Dr. Bhatt will present on the topic of “Evolving Landscape of Antithrombotic Therapy for Atherosclerosis.” Aspirin remains the foundation of antiplatelet therapy. Trials soon to report will clarify its role in primary prevention. The role of aspirin in secondary prevention seems quite secure, though recent data have raised concerns about whether the enteric coating might impede its absorption and antiplatelet effects. Clopidogrel, now generic, remains in common use worldwide for high risk secondary prevention, as monotherapy in patients with myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease. It also remains an important part of dual antiplatelet therapy after stenting in stable coronary artery disease. In acute coronary syndromes, dual antiplatelet therapy seems particularly important for at least a year of therapy, regardless of whether patients are treated with stents or medical therapy; ticagrelor is being used instead of clopidogrel in patients at low bleeding risk. The combination of aspirin with low dose rivaroxaban may soon provide an additional option for stable coronary or peripheral artery disease.

Dr. Bhatt has been listed in Best Doctors in America from 2005 to 2018. He was selected by Brigham and Women’s Hospital as the 2014 Eugene Braunwald Scholar. He has over 1100 publications and is listed as a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher. He is Editor of Cardiovascular Intervention: A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease. Dr. Bhatt obtained his undergraduate science degree as a National Merit Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his medical doctorate from Cornell University. He completed a Master in Public Health with a concentration in clinical effectiveness at Harvard University. His residency in internal medicine was performed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and his cardiovascular training was at Cleveland Clinic.
